I Carbonai

Traditional charcoal burning is a centuries old practice which has all but died out. The painstaking process is handed down through generations of families in Calabria, Southern Italy, one of the last remaining sites for charcoal burning in Europe. 'Carbonai' as they are known in the South are an incredibly private, shy group. Over three trips I gained their trust and friendship. Allowing me to document this beautiful process.

I see this project as ongoing and hope to return to make a film about the Carbonai.
